I was fortunate to be be in the first class of the NLM/AAHSL Leadership Fellows, a program started in 2002 to match mid-career librarians with experienced Health Sciences Library directors to prepare them for future library leadership. I was matched with J. Michael Homan, the Director of the Mayo Clinic Libraries. Here are the values that that my mentor exemplified and demonstrated. My goal as a library administrator is to use these leadership values.
- Effective Communication
- Promote teamwork where everyone is valued
- Practice humility and demonstrate empathy
- Listen carefully.
- Bring positive energy to activities
- Passionate about the future of information professionals
- Project a clear vision for the future
- Build and demonstrate trust.
- Project a sense of purpose.
- Have a sense of humor that never disrespects individual beliefs.
- Be authentic and comfortable with imperfection.
