Leadership in Academic Libraries

I was fortunate to be be in the first class of the NLM/AAHSL Leadership Fellows, a program started in 2002 to match mid-career librarians with experienced Health Sciences Library directors to prepare them for future library leadership. I was matched with J. Michael Homan, the Director of the Mayo Clinic Libraries. Here are the values that that my mentor exemplified and demonstrated. My goal as a library administrator is to use these leadership values.

  • Effective Communication
  • Promote teamwork where everyone is valued
  • Practice humility and demonstrate empathy
  • Listen carefully.
  • Bring positive energy to activities
  • Passionate about the future of information professionals
  • Project a clear vision for the future
  • Build and demonstrate trust.
  • Project a sense of purpose.
  • Have a sense of humor that never disrespects individual beliefs.
  • Be authentic and comfortable with imperfection.
